Tennis is Elementary (TIE) is a statewide after-school program designed for elementary students in grades 1-6. Idaho Tennis Association conducts the program at each school’s gym, cafeteria, or multipurpose room by using the 10 and Under Tennis format which includes foam or low-compression balls, smaller racquets and a reduced court size. The program is designed to run two days a week (for 45 minutes to one hour) during the school year in most schools.
Students/parents can register online and IdTA provides all the equipment, instruction and prizes.
In 2009, four pilot programs were conducted in the spring, introducing 80 young players to the sport. In 2010, Idaho Tennis extended the program, running 29 sessions with over 500 total participants. During 2011, TiE expanded to 682 participants. The program continues to grow, with 2012 being our biggest year yet. Over the course of 2012, we ran 58 sessions statewide with over 1,000 kids picking up tennis racquets and participating!
With a lens focused on diversity, IdTA seeks to eventually host a program in every elementary school across the state and for the number of participants to grow exponentially in the next few years.
Tennis is Elementary is the ideal program to expose kids to the game of tennis and get exercise in an easy, fun and interactive way. It is the aim of IdTA to get kids excited about tennis so that they will join other programs organized by community tennis associations, clubs, parks and recreation departments and pros.
IdTA is actively looking for additional schools and instructors throughout the state to implement this program.
